The wife and I took Doobs out for dinner last night at Blue Moon Rocking Horse as a thank you for taking care of, and hanging out with, George while we were away last weekend. Not only that, but he had also called the cable company about our lousy internet service and set up an appointment and waited for a guy to come out yesterday and fix it. A great guy, that Doobie.

Afterward, we went back to our pad and Doobs and I played Warhawk on Playstation 3, battling it out online with other people. He and I have played a few times and we always get slaughtered. But we’re getting better. That game is so fun even win you’re losing, but it’s more fun when you’re winning.

Fun: Running up to Doobie’s team’s flag, taking it right under his nose and fleeing across the entire map with him in pursuit, trying and failing, to retrieve it before I cap it. Standing on a tower and launching rockets at Doobs, looking at his screen to see it blow him to smithereens. Neither of us smart enough to know how to plant the flag once we’ve actually got it back to our own base. Sitting in a gun turret, trying, and failing, to kill Doobs before he can run up and throw a grenade at me.

Good times.

Ken and Kersten are visiting us from Long Beach this week. On Sunday we went to Josie’s on the Upper West Side, then walked over to the park. The weather was weird and beautiful: sunny, yet with a little rain and thunder. Becky took part in a performance at the Bethesda Fountain, posing as a human obstacle over which a guy did a front flip. They were funny.

We saw one of the coolest things ever at a bar in the West Village on Saturday night. It was a little statue of a sumo wrestler atop the bar. It was about 1.5 feet high, squatting, hands on knees, with a look of concentration. To make look even cooler, the people at the bar had put oversized sunglasses on its face.

The bartender couldn’t tell us where they got it, but I searched for “sumo statue” yesterday and found it! It’s Basho the Sumo Wrestler Sculpture, and one day it will be mine.

I am currently reading the epilogue of The Great Bridge. It’s an amazing story and I highly recommend that you read it.

Coincidentally, this Friday, May 23, 2008, is the 125th anniversary of the opening of the bridge and there are all kinds of Brooklyn Bridge birthday events happening throughout the weekend.

B and I are going to take the walking tour and see what it’s all about. Should be fun!

Doobs lives in New York now. He flew in on Monday. We saw his new apartment yesterday — a huge studio with a brand new kitchen, in Brooklyn. (edit: He’s not taking that apartment.) We’re stoked he’s here.

Doobs & New York City

We were exhausted when we got home on Sunday. It was the day of the Marathon in NYC, and for us it was a long, fun day.

We woke up, fed George, relaxed, watched a few scenes from Saturday Night Live again while we drank coffee. Kristen Wiig is our favorite comedian on the show and the reason we’ve watched it lately.”I have 20 cousisn in space . . . so . . . ”

Then we played Scrabble. Rebecca played all letters for a bingo with “boogiers” (not a word) and I played a bingo with “trained” with Rebecca cutting me some slack on whether on not “le” was a word, created by the e in “trained.” Ultimately, I won the game by a lot of points. Rebecca will say it’s because she pulled a vowels, but it’s really because I am the shit.

My wife had the brilliant idea to get sandwiches from Breadsticks around the corner and then take the train up to Central Park to eat lunch and watch the marathon. She packed a tote bag with books and a towel to sit on. We took the A train up to Colombus Circle, fought through the crowds and barricades and found a nice hill to sit on in the southwest side of the park. We ate and watched the 3 1/2-hour marathoners as they ran the last 0.2 miles to the finish line.

When we were done with lunch we walked under a bridge, strolled through the park to the east side and watched a little more. We stood on the sideline with others and shouted out the names we read on t-shirts — “Go Bob! You’re almost there!” “Come on Nancy! You can do it!” Then we went to meet up with Abby and her friends on 1st Avenue.

The bar we were supposed to meet up in was packed beyond belief. I would rather have shot myself than try to get in, and was happy that everyone else felt the same way. We walked up first a little while and came to another bar which Abby and her friends were going into and which I would rather have shot myself than enter.

Rebecca and I left and walked back over to the park. We walked down Fifth Ave. along the park to the Apple Store. Rebecca bought an iPhone and a carrying case for her computer. Rebecca has an iPhone! Because she had left her computer at work and needed it to set up her phone, we walked over to her showroom to get it.

Rebecca’s showroom is on the 34th floor and has an amazing view of downtown and the Hudson river. There was still a little pink dusklight left when we got there. I got to see how cool her showroom looks with all the new furniture and decorations she’s put in. We have lunch there a few times a week, but with market this week, she’s made it look even cooler.

We were exhausted when we left and B wanted to take a cab. I convinced her that the train station was right there and it would be quick. We went to get on the 1 train but the entrance was gated shut. We tried to hail a cab for a minute, but none were available. We walked to 8th ave. to catch the A train back to 23rd.

When we got home we were pooped and it was only around 5:30. We were also starving so got delivery from Lasagna. After eating delicious pasta we were pretty much dead and zonked out. Good day, fun times in New York City.
